Solving Queens

Abstract

Every morning, my colleagues and I race to solve Queens: a logic puzzle on LinkedIn where you place queens on a grid so that no two queens can attack each other.

I became curious: how fast could a computer solve these puzzles? And what types of algorithms would work well?
As a side project I built a solver for Queens that finds solutions for these puzzles. Whether you are interested in algorithm design, puzzle-solving, or just want to finally beat your colleagues at the morning game, you will get to see techniques you can apply to similar problems.

Biography

Jochem Berndsen is a mathware architect at Sioux Technologies. He is at his best when software engineering and algorithm design come together. Over the years he had the privilege to tackle optimization challenges ranging from vehicle routing and machine scheduling to surface reconstruction.

In his free time, you can find Jochem on stage improvising with his theater group.
His latest side project, a lightning-fast solver for the Queens puzzle, combines his love of algorithms with a healthy dose of competitive spirit.
