Abstract

ViNotion exists for 10 year now and in that time the intelligence of machine vision has significantly increased from relative simple application-specific vision tasks with heuristic algorithms, towards sophisticated visual machine learning. The one constant constraint over the years is the limited amount of processing power. We present state-of-the-art video content analytics for real-time smart surveillance and demonstrate different use cases implementations.

Besides algorithmic advances and new opportunities for automation in different applications, the way-of-working within the company to increase the quality of software development has also changed. We present our component-based software platform architecture and motivate the design choices that we made by learning the hard way. Important requirements are hardware costs, processing performance, portability to different hardware platforms and all the non-functional requirements that are common for sustainable product development.

Of course we don't have the arrogance to claim the silver bullet solution though, and are looking forward to your suggestions and have an interactive discussion.

Biography

Egbert Jaspers, ViNotion
Egbert graduated for his M.Sc. degree at the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1996. In the same year he started as a Research Scientist in field of video processing at Philips Research. From November 2003 until February 2007 he worked as a consultant architect on technical software engineering for Logica (CGI nowadays) in the Netherland.
With more than 10 years of experience he founded ViNotion in March of 2007, a high-tech start-up company that delivers innovative technology for automation, based on intelligent video analysis or computer vision (www.vinotion.nl).

Kris van Rens, Systems architect, ViNotion
From the moment on since Kris first got into touch with his dad's 1983 ZX Spectrum, he was captivated by the wonderful world of software programming. In 1995 he learned to program 'Pacman' in real-time X86 assembly, soon followed by C and C++. Also, since 2000, he has been using Linux intensively. In 2009 he graduated from the faculty of Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, specializing in video coding, architectures and analysis.
Lately he shows great interest in C++1x, design patterns, testing and client/server application programming.
